“Only a total rejection of the lies of Brexit can mend Westminster’s broken politics”, Leader of Plaid Cymru Westminster MP Liz Saville Roberts will say in a keynote address to the party’s annual conference today.

At the Llandudno Plaid conference, she will warn Labor that it will face ‘the same irreconcilable contradictions’ as the Tories if it does not reject the ‘Brexit lies’.

Ms Saville Roberts will describe the chaos of recent weeks as ‘the culmination of a six-year Brexit psychodrama’. Lies about Brexit were “the root of Westminster’s chaos”, according to Ms Saville Roberts, which “created an accountability vacuum”.

She will say that given that UK trade with the EU is 16% lower than it would have been if Brexit had not happened, and that the UK economy has shrunk thanks to a 5.2% drop in GDP and a 13.7% drop in investment, “any rational, honest politician would look at Britain’s bleak economic outlook and recognize that we need a change in policy “.

Keir Starmer’s Labor party “finds no backbone to assert this fact”, according to Dwyfor MP Meirionnydd.

She will reiterate her party’s call for the UK to join the single market and customs union and, in the long term, for Wales to ‘join the European family of nations – as a free and independent Cymru “.

“Make lying illegal”

To restore faith in politics, Ms Saville Roberts introduced the Elected Representatives (Prohibition of Deception) Bill, which seeks to make it illegal to lie in politics.

The bill is expected to receive its second reading on October 28.

MP Liz Saville Roberts will say: “What is causing the chaos in Westminster? Lies. Brexit is dividing the Conservative Party, which then forced communities and families to turn against each other.

“Truss’s lies about his dangerous libertarian tax schemes caused the markets to crash. The lies have created an accountability vacuum in Westminster – and allowed talentless fanatics to seize the reins of power without knowing how to use them.

“Since that reckless referendum vote, the Conservative Party has decided that if you nail your Brexit Blue colors to the flagpole, you can get any job you like.

“That’s why I have a bill pending in parliament that would ban lying in politics. It shouldn’t be controversial. In the health, education and business sectors – which clearly have an impact on the public interest – similar laws have already been established.

“Brexit Psychodrama”

She will continue: “This week has been the culmination of a six-year Brexit psychodrama.

“The Conservative illusion pushed by reckless politicians that we can both reduce trade with our nearest neighbors and grow the economy in 2016 has stripped Westminster policy of all credibility.

“Brexit has shrunk the UK economy by driving a 5.2% drop in GDP, a 13.7% drop in investment and trade between the UK and the EU, or 16% less than if Brexit had not taken place.

“Any rational and honest politician would look at Britain’s bleak economic outlook and recognize that we need a policy change. Starmer and Labor find no backbone to assert this fact.

“Brexit severed the link between evidence and government policy. This original 2016 illusion has now led to the downfall of four prime ministers.

“That illusion explains this crazy ‘mini’ budget. Truss couldn’t name any reputable economists who backed his plans – but in our post-Brexit, post-truth public discourse – the evidence is for the swots. Whatever you you need in this brave new world is blind faith.

“By embracing the hard Brexit project so fervently, Labor will also face the same irreconcilable contradictions when it finds itself in power. They want to ‘make Brexit work’ – but are wholeheartedly determined to maintain massive trade barriers that prevent Welsh businesses from trading freely with our closest neighbours.

“Starmer made it clear that a future Labor government would not agree to join the single market or the customs union. He is committed to strengthening the power of the economic crisis that is rushing towards us.

“Plaid Cymru believes in honest politics. Only a total rejection of the Brexit lies can mend Westminster’s broken politics. For the sake of our economy, we need to re-enter the single market and the customs union.”
